The uninsured rate has dropped among high-income Americans
Uninsured rate among high income Americans has dropped drastically owing to the Affordable Care Act- ACA. But, it’s tough to pin down the exact percentage. An analysis done by Matthew Fiedler of the USC-Brookings Schaeffer Initiative for Health Policy found that uninsured rates have fallen 20% to 40% amongst people of family incomes above 400% of the poverty line, with the implementation of ACA provisions, depending on the data available for research and the age group.
The report mentions that research conducted by the federal Current Population Survey reveals that uninsured rates among high income group have fallen from 6.4% in 2013 to 4.87% in 2016. This amounts to a 24% drop.
While the American Community Survey claims that it fell from 5.5% to 3.41% over the same period, and this amounts to 39.4% decrease. This shows that changes in insurance regulations caused due to ACA have driven young and healthy people towards insurance.
Both studies appear to show that the changes to insurance regulations under the ACA have actually driven young, healthy people to the marketplace instead of driving them away from it.
But, things are set to change with the repeal of the individual mandate.
