Apple introduces ECG app in its watch

The Apple watch now offers two features OK'd for medical use.

Here are some things to know about this new feature:

1) Apple released two new features: An electrocardiogram app and an irregular heart rhythm notification capability for the watchOS 5.1.2. Both these features aim to help wearers identify signs of atrial fibrillation, which is a common type of irregular heart rhythm.

2) The irregular heart rhythm notification feature on Apple Watch version Series 1 and later, occasionally reviews a wearer’s heart rhythm in the background of the device for symptoms of atrial fibrillation. This feature alerts the wearer in case it detects any irregular heart rhythm at select intervals.

3) The ECG app, which is only available on the most recent Apple Watch Series 4, allows wearers to take an ECG reading from their wrist. The app analyzes the reading to classify the wearer’s heart rhythm as atrial fibrillation, sinus rhythm or inconclusive. It also stores this data in the iPhone’s Health app.

Technologies like these and remote health monitoring system help in providing better healthcare outcomes.
